Can I foster if I have criminal convictions in my past?

It’s not uncommon for foster carers to have some convictions or cautions in their past. Normally these won’t rule you out from fostering, unless they are of a serious nature.  For any offence we would seek to understand the circumstances, how the matter has been addressed and your reflection or thoughts about the matter now.

At the first home visit you must tell the social worker about any involvement you have had with the police. They’ll let you know whether it’s a major, medium, or minor concern.

If you don’t tell us you have had a caution or conviction and the DBS check shows that you have, we may not proceed with your application, so please tell us the first time we visit you at home.

All details you share with us will be treated as confidential.
