Carer Training: Our Philosophy on Supporting Carers Every Step of the Way

It’s no secret that the choice to become a foster carer is far from a frivolous one. It’s an act of courage, compassion, and quiet strength. But we’re aware that it can also be a step into the unknown for a lot of people as they begin their journey.

That’s why, at CFC, we don’t believe in letting foster carers feel like they’re taking that step alone. From the very beginning, we’re here. We believe that our support shouldn’t be contained to just the forms and formalities. We strive for something more meaningful. Because foster care isn’t just a system that people go through. It’s a relationship. A commitment. We consider it a journey that we all take together. This philosophy is at the heart of the extensive and ongoing training that we offer to our carers.

Allow us to explain…

Our Training Begins with the Heart

We’re a not-for-profit organisation, and that shapes everything we do. Our focus isn’t rooted in profit margins. It’s always on the people we deal with. That includes both the children and carers. It’s real, human, and deeply rooted in the kind of support that makes a difference when the door closes, and the day begins.

We don’t ever expect any new carers to arrive knowing everything there is to know. That’s not how any of us start, after all. At the end of the day, great carers are made, rather than born, and our role is to give you the tools, guidance, and confidence to grow into this work, day by day.

Learning That Feels Like Real Life

What we provide isn’t training for training’s sake. It’s shaped by lived experience, therapeutic insight, and a deep understanding of what children in care truly need. Our sessions explore everything from trauma and attachment to behaviour and identity, leading to a Level 2 qualification in therapeutic parenting. But beyond the certificate, what you gain is perspective and clarity. It primes our carers to be able to take on the challenges that our young people can carry with them. They’re able to more keenly develop a sense of why things feel the way that they do, and how to respond with empathy without feeling overwhelmed.

After all, fostering is not about perfection. It’s about presence. And presence takes practice.

It Doesn’t End After the First Session

The truth is, you don’t stop learning when the course ends. Fostering will keep stretching, surprising and teaching you. That’s why our support is ongoing, adaptive, and rooted in the real challenges carers face. It is an ever-ongoing process of support. Not just in the first month, but in all the time that follows.

Close to Home, Close to Heart

We believe that support should never feel out of reach. That’s why we hold our training locally, near our regional offices in Gloucester and Lancaster. Whether you’re in a quiet village or a busier town, you’re never far from someone who understands.

Our sessions are in-person, interactive, and always trauma-informed. But more than that, they’re personal. Honest conversations, not lectures. A space to reflect, ask, laugh, share. When the class ends, the support continues through mentoring, community groups, and time set aside just for you to breathe, think, and reconnect.

Meeting Standards, Without Losing Soul

Of course, every foster carer needs to meet the government’s “Training, Support and Development Standards” and we’ll guide you through them as part of your Level 2 qualification. But we don’t treat them like hoops to jump through. We treat them as scaffolding: something to hold you steady as you build confidence, step by step.

If it’s been a while since you’ve been in any kind of formal learning space, don’t worry. We’ve designed this process to feel encouraging, never intimidating. No red pens. No pressure. Just thoughtful support, right when you need it most.

What We Cover

Our courses go deep. Safeguarding, behaviour management, therapeutic parenting, mental health, diversity, identity, cultural sensitivity. We don’t shy away from the hard stuff because children in care have often faced more than their share of it themselves. We believe that they deserve carers who who’s willingness to help is matched by the knowledge they’ll need to effectively support them.

We also tailor our training to reflect the communities we serve across Cumbria, Wiltshire, Lancashire, and Gloucestershire. Because local context matters. A child’s sense of place and belonging starts with the people who raise them, and we want carers to feel as connected to their communities as the children they support.

Confidence That Runs Deep

We often say that confident carers help create safe children. When you feel supported, prepared, and genuinely seen, you’re better able to meet the emotional needs of the children in your care with love, patience, and clarity.

That’s what our training is really about. Not just passing along information, but nurturing something deeper: trust, resilience, and the belief that you can do this even on the hard days.

A Final Word

There’s no such thing as a perfect foster carer. But there are so many extraordinary ones. They’re the people who show up, who listen, who try again when things don’t go to plan.

If you’re reading this, maybe that’s you. Maybe you’re wondering if fostering is something you could do. We’d love to explore that with you. No pressure. Just a conversation about what’s possible and how we can help you get there.
