Our North Star When the Weather Turns

The sea is calm when everything is going well.

A child settles into their home. A carer feels equipped to keep going through a difficult patch. A family picks up the phone to enquire about fostering. Colleagues feel energised and connected to our purpose. We are making progress towards the future we want to create.

In those moments, it's easy to feel confident about where we're heading.

But the true test of any organisation isn't how it behaves in calm waters. It's what happens when the storm arrives.

We all face challenges

Every organisation faces challenging periods. Foster carers face them. Children and young people face them. Teams face them. Leaders face them.

There are times when uncertainty creeps in. When the path ahead isn't obvious. When the demands feel relentless. When it would be easier to retreat, lower our expectations or simply accept things as they are.

Yet those moments reveal something important. They reveal whether we are being driven by circumstance or guided by purpose.

At Community Foster Care, we talk about purpose as our North Star.

The North Star doesn't remove the storm.

It doesn't calm the waves or make the journey easier.

What it does is provide direction.

When visibility is poor and conditions are difficult, it helps us remember where we are trying to get to and why the journey matters.

For us, that purpose is clear:

To enable all children to thrive in a loving family.

It is a simple statement, but it reminds us why we exist and what we are ultimately trying to achieve. When the work feels difficult, when the path ahead is uncertain, and when competing priorities threaten to pull us in different directions, our purpose helps us stay focused on what matters most.

Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive. Every child deserves the security, belonging and love that comes from being part of a family. And every child deserves adults who are willing to challenge assumptions, systems and ways of working when they aren't delivering the outcomes children need.

That shared purpose unites everyone across our organisation. Foster carers, social workers, family support workers, business support staff and trustees may all play different roles, but we are all working towards the same destination.

Purpose Matters

Purpose matters because it gives meaning to difficult work. It reminds us why we persevere through challenges, have difficult conversations and continue striving for improvement. It helps us make decisions when there isn't an obvious answer and keeps us focused on what matters most.

This month, as part of our Fostering Differently campaign, we're encouraging ourselves and others to question everything.

Not because we enjoy challenging the status quo. But because our purpose demands it.

When children and families deserve better, accepting "that's how we've always done it" is never enough.

Purpose gives us the courage to ask difficult questions. Purpose gives us the resilience to navigate difficult times. And purpose ensures that even when the weather turns, we continue moving in the right direction.

Because when you know your North Star, you never lose sight of where you're trying to go.
