Foster carer training opportunities

Ongoing learning and development for our foster carers is just one of the ways our community helps children and young people to realise their ambitions and dreams.  We require foster carers to demonstrate a commitment to ongoing learning and development.

All our foster carers are offered regular training on various subjects throughout the year:

Before approval as a foster carer

Prior to approval all foster carers undertake preparation training for becoming a foster carer.

Induction – completed in Year 1

  • In the first year we ensure all foster parents complete:

  • Induction into CFC

  • Safe caring, health and well – being

  • Safeguarding – (to include all family members)

  • Promoting Positive Behaviour

  • Recording, Storing and Sharing (Managing) Sensitive Information

  • Medication

Essential foster carer training

Following your induction we require all foster parents to undertake the following training which is provided:

  • First Aid

  • Promoting Educational Attainment

  • Child development

  • Safeguarding such as Child Exploitation or Children missing from home

  • Therapeutic development

  • Administering medication

  • Equality and diversity

  • Staying put

 Additional foster carer training

  • Other topics offered may include topics such as:

  • Foetal alcohol syndrome

  • Attachment theory

  • Restrictive intervention training

  • Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) training

  • Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy

  • Digital skills

Training programmes are put together following discussions with foster carers and our staff. We also look at the training needs of the Foster Care Panel and Trustees who oversee Community Foster Care.

All our newly approved foster carers complete the Training and Development Standards for Foster Carers workbook in their first year, which is set out by the Department for Education. We’ll support you with this by providing extra one-to-one support.

If you need specific training such as Makaton or you’re interested in a particular therapeutic approach we’ll support you to gain the skills and knowledge that you need.
